Tools for Economic Analysis

For many people, interpreting economic information is a daunting task best left to experts. As a result, there has been a general lack of understanding about economic changes occurring in the West, and some of the reasons for these changes.

In partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the Sonoran Institute has applied existing information technology to produce custom socioeconomic profiles at the national, regional, state, county, and community levels. This information can be accessed on line at no cost, and profiles generated immediately. Moreover, the profiles provide significant guidance to the user on interpreting the data. These profiles are already widely used by a variety of audiences, including the BLM, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, county planners, elected officials, and numerous conservation and other non-profit organizations. Click here for a list of reports published by the Socioeconomics Program of Sonoran Institute.

Economic Profile System (EPS and EPSC)

The Economic Profile System (EPS) allows anyone to automatically and efficiently produce customized socioeconomic profiles for any geography in the Western United States. The profile contains tables and figures that illustrate long-term trends in population; employment and personal income by industry; average earnings; business development; retirement and other non-labor income; commuting patterns; and agriculture.  EPSC provides a snapshot of current socioeconomic information at the community level. To download finished reports of every county in the Western US, visit Headwaters Economics.

The EPS and EPSC are public domain database and retrieval system. For a free copy of the EPS, the relevant data for the Western United States, and the EPS User’s Manual, please log in at the left and click on Downloads. If you haven't created an account, click here. We only keep your email address on file so we can alert you to updates to the EPS software and data.
